Fall into mine shaft kills man

YERINGTON -- A California man died Saturday after he fell into a mine shaft in northern Nevada.

Lyon County sheriff's deputies said Terry Berardy of Mokelumne Hill, Calif., was unconscious after he was pulled from the shaft around the Ludwig Mine near Smith Valley.

Berardy fell at least 80 feet down the shaft as he and friends and family members were exploring the area, deputies said.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. No one else was injured.

Emergency workers from Lyon and Washoe counties helped pull him from the shaft.

Authorities were investigating the incident.
