Fallen officers honored at memorial

Officers killed in the line of duty were honored in the 17th Annual Nevada Law Enforcement Officers Memorial ceremony Thursday in Carson City. Three men were added to this year’s commemorative service, including: Metro Officer David Vanbuskirk, Southern Pacific Railroad Police Watchman Jose Sancedo and Watchman John Montague.

A relay race took place as part of the ceremony as a symbolic gesture of appreciation and remembrance. Runners passed along batons with the officers’ names on them. The named batons exchanged hundreds of pairs of hands throughout the relay until they reached the families of the deceased.

The batons included a memorial scroll and plaque for display. Batons for the memorial itself were presented and laid near the statue.

Las Vegas Metro Sheriff Douglas Gillespie, Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval and hundreds of family and friends of the late officers were in attendance.
