Family homeless after midday fire

A noon fire gutted the garage of a northwest valley on Friday and left a family homeless.

An occupant of the home told investigators she saw flames around the dryer in the home, at 2237 La Sombra Street, near Lake Mead and Jones boulevards.

When Las Vegas Fire Department firefighters arrived, heavy flames and thick black smoke were coming from the garage. Everybody inside escaped unharmed.

The cause of the fire, which caused about $100,000 in damage, is unknown. The American Red Cross is assisting the family.
