Farewell, my Facebook friend …

Today's the day so many of us haven't been waiting for — National Unfriend Day. ABC talk show host Jimmy Kimmel created the "holiday," on which you’re supposed to remove people who aren't actual friends from your Facebook Friends list. (No word yet whether a Hallmark card for the day will follow.)

"The idea is to bring you closer to your actual friends," Kimmel said on a video on the ABC website:

I love the idea of weeding out my Facebook friends. I try to keep Facebook as a place to keep up with family, real friends and certain colleagues. I haven't done any weeding there for a while, but I am finding more and more updates in my Facebook newsfeed from people I've never met in person. These will be the first to go.

Kimmel has some other suggestions of whom to unfriend:

— Anyone you wouldn't give your phone number to
— Anyone who has your phone number, but whose every call you let go to voice mail
— Annoying people
— Overposters
— People who dress their pets in costume and put their pictures up
— Anyone you don't really want to hear from, or about
— Your mom
— Your aunt

(I’m not sure why no male relatives are axworthy, but it’s not my list)

I'm going to do my part. To those who will be joining my list of former friends: I don't think you'll even know I lopped you off. We just weren't that close to begin with. Heck, I don't know anyone who knows you and I'm not sure why I accepted your friend request in the first place.

Try taking the scalpel to your own friends list. It feels good. (I just reduced my list by 10!)
