Final leg of freeway linking Reno, Carson City nears finish

Nevada transportation officials say the final leg of a new freeway linking Reno and Carson City should be open to traffic in about two months.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reports crews on Tuesday began pouring concrete for the final 2 miles of roadway.

If all goes as planned, the 8.5-mile-long Interstate 580 freeway will open to cars and trucks in late July.

The final phase of work, an interchange near Bower's Mansion at the north end of Washoe Valley, should be done in late September.

The centerpiece of the $555 million project is the massive bridge that spans Galena Creek in Pleasant Valley.

At 300 feet high, 1,700 feet long and with a 700-foot-long supporting arch, the Galena Creek Bridge is the largest structure of its kind.
