Fisher’s late field goal lifts Foothill to victory over Basic

Cory Fisher made a 32-yard field goal with 57 seconds remaining in regulation, and Foothill held on for a 30-27 victory over host Basic on Thursday.

Fisher, who missed two earlier field-goal attempts, capped a 12-play, 65-yard drive that was aided by two long passes from Falcons quarterback Drew Doxtator and a key holding penalty against Basic on third-and-9 from the Wolves’ 42-yard line.

Doxtator finished 26-for-36 for 329 yards and three touchdowns. His 5-yard pass to Ian Ellis, which came after Basic was stopped on a fake punt at its own 20-yard line, gave the Falcons (4-2, 2-0 Southeast League) a 27-18 lead 27 seconds into the fourth quarter.

Ellis had 10 receptions for 193 yards and two scores.

Quarterback Antraye Johnson led the Wolves’ comeback in the fourth quarter, finding running back Jon Scoffield wide open over the middle for a 60-yard touchdown that made it 27-24 with 10:16 remaining in the fourth. Basic failed on the 2-point conversion — the Wolves went 0-for-4 on 2-point tries — but Johnson’s 33-yard punt return set up his game-tying 27-yard field goal with 4:19 to play.

On the final drive of the game, Johnson’s 20-yard scramble put Basic (2-4, 1-1) at the Falcons’ 33-yard line, but he threw three straight incompletions before Scoffield was stopped at the 10 on the final play of the game.

Johnson had a huge game with 258 yards passing to go along with 154 yards on the ground, including a spectacular 67-yard touchdown run to open the third quarter that saw him avoid several defenders and weave his way across the field. Johnson also had a 54-yard punt return for a score to give Basic a 6-0 lead in the first quarter.
