Five extra cooling centers opened

The Southern Nevada Regional Planning Coalition had to open five additional cooling centers for the homeless Tuesday because the mercury hit 112 degrees.

The extra centers were in addition to the ones open daily, at the Catholic Charities at 1501 Las Vegas Blvd. North, the Salvation Army at 31 W. Owens Ave. and at Shade Tree on 1 W. Owens Ave.

People can dial 211 from any pay phone to find the nearest cooling station. The stations serve as temporary shelters.
