Forest Service officials plan prescribed burn west of Reno

RENO — Forest Service officials have announced plans for a prescribed burn this week in the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest just west of Reno.

The intentional fires will be set in the Dog Valley area near Verdi about a mile from the Nevada-California line beginning today, weather permitting.

Crews intend to burn about 28 acres of forest undergrowth. The project may take a couple of days.

District fuels specialist Steve Howell said prescribed fire is an efficient way to remove woody debris and litter to reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfire.
