Former Henderson councilman earns Republican caucus endorsement

CARSON CITY -- Former Henderson City Councilman Steve Kirk has picked up the Senate Republican Caucus endorsement in what could be one of the most contested state Senate races of 2012.

Kirk, 52, who lost a race for Henderson mayor to Andy Hafen in 2009 by 45 votes, will face incumbent Sen. Shirley Breeden, D-Henderson, in the Senate District 5 race.

The GOP lost the seat in 2008, relinquishing control of the Senate for the first time in 18 years. Democrats control the Senate 11-10. They hold a
6 percentage point voter registration lead over Republicans in the district.

The early endorsement, more than three months before filing starts in March, shows how important the seat is to Republicans.

District 5 generally runs south from Warm Springs Road between Bermuda Road on the west and Boulder Highway on the east.

"Steve has proven himself time and time again as a fiscal conservative and a dedicated watchdog over the taxpayers' dollar," said term-limited Senate Minority Leader Mike McGinness, R-Fallon.

Kirk, raised in Henderson, served 12 years on the Henderson City Council. He is a graduate of Basic High School and has a degree in design engineering technology from Brigham Young University. He is general sales manager for Sun Valley Imaging and Technologies in Las Vegas.
