Frigid air to dip into state
RENO -- Most Northern Nevadans aren't realizing any dreams of a white Christmas, but they can plan on a very cold couple of days afterward.
A fast-moving storm and cold front starting in the Gulf of Alaska is expected to reach the Sierra Nevada and western portions of Nevada on Wednesday.
National Weather Service forecasters are not sure whether the storm will hit the Reno-Tahoe area directly or pass just to the north, but the cold air and winds are expected to drop Wednesday night's temperature down to the single digits above 8,000 feet and the low teens across all of Northern Nevada, with the coldest readings in the higher areas where there still is some snow cover.
By Wednesday afternoon the wind chill in the Sierra could drop down to 20 degrees below zero. The high in Reno is expected to hover around 30 degrees.
Readings still will be above records for Wednesday and Thursday, which range from zero to minus 4.
A few inches of snow could fall Wednesday, and snow levels are expected to drop to the valley floors, the weather service said.
