Fugitive police officer won’t fight extradition

A fugitive police officer caught in Las Vegas agreed to be extradited back to Alabama this morning, where he would face charges that he stole $2,500 from his own police department.

Sgt. Faron White, of the Decatur Police Department, told District Judge Douglas Smith that he wouldn't fight extradition during a brief court appearance. White appeared in court via teleconference from the county jail, where he is being held without bail.

"I want to go back to Alabama," he said.

The Alabama authorities have 30 days to pick him up from the jail or he could be released.

White's family reported him missing about a week ago after he didn't return home from work. Federal marshals arrested White in the lobby of a Hampton Inn in Las Vegas on Monday.

He is accused of staging his disappearance and stealing $2,500 in confiscated drug money from his department.

Faron, a decorated officer who worked in the squad that investigated drug dealers, organized crime and gamblers, was chosen as Decatur's 2007 officer of the year.
