Garage destroyed in Sunday fire

A garage fire near Eastern Avenue and Owens Avenue damaged a home Sunday afternoon, according to Las Vegas Fire Department.

Firefighters received a call just after 4 p.m. to a one-story home at 1321 Arthur Avenue. Heavy smoke was coming out of the home when firefighters arrived. The fire spread to the attic and caused considerable to the roof. They were able to bring the fire under control within 15 minutes.

The garage and a pickup truck is completely gutted, spokesman Tim Szymanski said.

The exact cause is still under investigation, but the fire department believe it started in the corner of the garage near chemicals stored inside. They said it was accidental and probably due to heat.

One person was home at the time of the fire and he did not suffer any injuries. The occupant said he was watching television when he heard a loud bang. He looked around the house until he saw smoke coming from the sides.

Szymanksi said the home went through heavy heat and smoke damage from the inside. Two adults are displaced as a result.

Total damages estimated to $125,000.
