Garbage collector killed on job in LV

A Republic Services worker died Thursday after he slipped off a garbage truck and was run over by the vehicle, authorities and a company official said.

The worker, who had been with Republic Services for two years, tried to jump onto the driver's side running board when he slipped underneath the moving truck at about 11:30 a.m. on Tree Line Drive, near Charleston and Hollywood boulevards, Republic Services and authorities stated.

"Everyone at Republic Services is shocked and stunned by news of the accident that claimed the life of one of our own," Republic Services spokesman Bill Marion said in a statement.

He said Republic Services employees are trained not to board a moving garbage truck and not to stand on the running board of any moving vehicle.

The Nevada Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the incident but declined to comment in detail about it, said Stephen Coffield, acting chief administrative officer for Nevada OSHA.
