Going to meet the elephant whisperer

Kayla Cothrun, a junior at Foothill High School in Henderson, has won a summer trip to South Africa for her award-winning essay on “Why we should protect plants, animals and our environment?”

As part of her prize, 17-year-old Cothrun will tour the Thula Thula Preserve, owned by Lawrence Anthony, who is known as the “Elephant Whisperer” for his rapport with elephants and famous for rescuing the animals from the Baghdad Zoo during the Iraq War.

Anthony visited the Clark County School District last summer and extended an invitation for the essay contest, which was sponsored by the Earth Organization, the Henderson Chamber of Commerce, and America’s Schools.

School matters

Clark County School District Superintendent Walt Rulffes and School Board members Carolyn Edwards and Sheila Moulton will discuss legislative issues impacting education on the next episode of School Matters, which airs at 8 p.m. on April 16 on Vegas PBS, channel 10.
