Good winters expected to boost hunting tags in Nevada

CARSON CITY - Nevada wildlife biologists are recommending increases in the number of big game hunting tags this year, thanks in part to back-to-back winters that created optimum conditions for wildlife.

The winter of 2010-2011 saw record precipitation around the state. Biologists say that provided an abundance of water and feed last summer for wildlife. In contrast this winter was dry and mild, allowing for large numbers of young animals to survive.

Biologists estimate the state's mule deer herd at 112,000, up about 3,000 from last year. They are recommending an overall increase of 54 percent in the number of tags for mule deer. For resident rifle hunts, the agency is recommending 15,595 buck tags. Last year 7,813 tags were issued.

The Nevada Wildlife Commission will set final tag quotas next week.
