Gorman advances to American Legion title game

Johnny Field capped a four-run sixth inning with a sacrifice fly to drive in the go-ahead run Sunday as Bishop Gorman rallied from an 8-3 deficit to beat Sumter (S.C.) in the American Legion World Series in Shelby N.C.

Gorman (73-7-1) scored twice in the fourth, four times in the sixth and added two insurance runs in the eighth to improve to 3-0 in the tournament and guarantee a spot in Tuesday’s championship.

Jeff Malm went 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs and picked up the save for the Titans. Winning pitcher Paul Sewald was 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs.

Gorman will face South Richmond (Va.) at 5 p.m. today. Regardless of the outcome, the Titans will participate in Tuesday’s title game.
