Great Basin National Park eyes improvements

BAKER -- Nevada's only national park is seeking public comment on a proposed rehabilitation project for a popular campground.
Great Basin National Park officials say the comments will help guide their environmental analysis of the Upper Lehman Creek Campground project.
Among other things, plans call for removal of the upper loop access road along the campground's north side, and for restoration of wetland and spring channels affected by the original road construction.
Officials of the park, located east of Ely near the Utah line, also want to move the campground amphitheater, remove two campsites and add two others, improve campsites and picnic areas, and repave the entire campground access road.
The forested campground, at about 10,000 feet elevation, offers dramatic views of 13,065-foot Wheeler Peak.
Comments will be accepted until Jan. 10.
