Gunshot causes school to be locked down

A downtown elementary school was briefly locked down after a shot was fired outside of the school Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.

The shooting happened about 2:10 p.m. outside of Hewetson Elementary School at the corner of North 20th Street and McWilliams Avenue, near Bonanza Road and Bruce Street.

Nobody was injured by the gunshot, which was the result of a fight involving about seven students from other schools, said Las Vegas police spokesman Jose Montoya.

The fight started as a result of a beef from the end of the last school year, said Lt. Ken Young with the Clark County School District Police Department.

Those involved are believed to be from 13 to 16 years old and attend either high school or middle school elsewhere.

The two students at the center of the confrontation were placed into custody, Montoya said.

Their names were not released.

Young said the gun was not recovered.
