Handgun found on student at Western

A 16-year-old Western High School student was arrested Thursday for bringing an unloaded .38-caliber handgun to the school, a Clark County School District police officer said.

The incident marked the second time in consecutive days that police found a gun inside a student's backpack.

About 11 a.m. Thursday, two Western students got into a fight at the school's courtyard, school police Capt. James Ketsaa said.

Western's campus officers searched one student's backpack after he started acting suspiciously and found the gun, Ketsaa said. The student was charged with possession of a dangerous weapon on school property.

On Wednesday, a 15-year-old Legacy High School student was arrested and charged with possession of a dangerous weapon on school property when a loaded .38-caliber handgun was found in his backpack.

The student was skipping class with three other students near the school's tennis courts.

Four guns have been confiscated on school property since the school year started on Aug. 27.

Last school year, 54 guns were confiscated, Ketsaa said.
