Hearing delayed for suspect in police shooting

Las Vegas police officer Michael Madland, who was shot twice earlier this week, was recovering from an additional Thursday surgery but remained in critical condition, police said Friday.

The surgery was to "repair damage sustained" when Madland was shot by stolen-vehicle suspect Damon Beal, police said.

Beal, 26, was shot and killed by Madland's partner, whose identity has not yet been released.

Madland, 31, has been hospitalized since being shot once in the leg and once in the chest about 9 p.m. Tuesday. A protective vest stopped the bullet from penetrating his chest, but the other shot severed an artery in his leg.

He was chasing a stolen-vehicle suspect, identified by police as Beal, through backyards along Dolores Drive, near Washington Avenue and Rainbow Boulevard.

Officers had spotted the stolen Mercedes-Benz near Rainbow and Charleston Boulevard, gave chase, and the car crashed into a wall. Beal and another suspect, 45-year-old Marvin Wilson, ran away, police said. Wilson was captured and is in the Clark County Detention Center on $103,000 bail.

Wilson appeared in Las Vegas Justice Court on Friday only to have his hearing delayed. He is scheduled to appear again Monday on charges of possession of a stolen vehicle and resisting a police officer, relating to Tuesday night's shooting.

On Friday, Wilson appeared with a bandaged left forearm and he attempted to cover his face with a piece of paper from media photo and video cameras.

On Thursday, Wilson pleaded not guilty to a petty larceny charge stemming from an unrelated theft at an adult bookstore in May. He will stand trial in April, according to jail records.

Meanwhile, the Injured Police Officers Fund, IPOF, has established an account for Madland's family at Nevada State Bank. The account number is 8243.
