Henderson city worker dies of accident injuries

A Henderson city employee has died from injuries he suffered Thursday in an undisclosed accident at City Hall.

Edgar Malloy, 62, died at University Medical Center on Friday.

He was an 11-year employee of the city, where he worked as a heating, ventilation and air conditioning technician.

The accident occurred somewhere in the city's main offices on Water Street in downtown Henderson. Citing the ongoing investigation, city spokeswoman Cindy Herman would not say where in the building Malloy was injured or what he may have been doing at the time.

City Councilman Jack Clark said the accident occurred on the roof, but he did not know any other details.

Malloy reportedly suffered head trauma and was taken by ambulance to St. Rose Dominican Hospital, Siena campus. He was later flown by helicopter to University Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Nevada's Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the accident.

The agency has up to six months to complete its work.

Herman said Malloy and his trademark wide suspenders were a fixture at City Hall and other facilities throughout Henderson. So many people knew him, she said, that the city has offered his family the use of the Henderson Convention Center for his memorial service, which is scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday.

"There were a lot of people with the city who were close to Ed and his family. Our hearts just go out to them," Herman said.

She described Malloy as a "big teddy bear" in both stature and spirit. He often came across as gruff at first, Herman said, but "when it came down to it, he had a heart of gold."

The city has arranged for grief counselors to be on hand this week for Henderson employees and Malloy's family, which includes his parents, two sons, two grandsons, a brother and four sisters.

"There are a lot of people who are grieving right now, and we're trying to help them," Herman said. "It's been tough."
