The city of Henderson will spend nearly $1 million to buy 37 new Chevrolet vehicles, including the city's first electric-powered vehicle.
Spokesman Bud Cranor said the city has 97 hybrid vehicles in its fleet, but the new Chevrolet Volt will be its first electric vehicle. City officials expect to add more electric vehicles to the fleet in the future.
"This is a test for us to see which of the vehicles performs the best," he said.
The City Council approved the purchase of the 37 new vehicles, for a total of $996,263, on Tuesday. The vehicles will be bought from Fairway Chevrolet in Las Vegas through a purchasing contract shared with the state of Nevada.
According to background included in the agenda item, 29 of the new vehicles will replace worn or wrecked patrol cars in the Henderson Police Department.
The Volt, at about $36,700, is the most expensive vehicle to be bought. It will replace a damaged 2005 Toyota Prius, a hybrid, in the City Hall motor pool.
Cranor said the city plans to install charging stations in its parking garage at City Hall.
