Highway Patrol to receive 63 new vehicles
CARSON CITY -- Gov. Jim Gibbons and other members of the state Board of Examiners made a lot of Nevada Highway Patrol officers happy Wednesday when they agreed to buy 63 new patrol cars.
Without any discussion, the board voted to purchase the cars, at an average cost of $27,256 each, to replace vehicles that have traveled 120,000 or more miles.
Gibbons, Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto and Secretary of State Ross Miller raised no questions about the car purchase.
The state faces a potential $3 billion shortfall in 2011. The patrol cars cost $1.717 million.
Highway Patrol spokeswoman Gail Powell said police vehicles used to be auctioned off after they were driven 105,000 miles.
State Budget Director Andrew Clinger said the 63 replaced vehicles will either be sold at auction or assigned for use by other state agencies.
