Highway’s problem with wind, semi-trailer trucks under study
RENO -- State transportation officials have begun a study of the Washoe Valley's windy conditions, which have been strong enough to force detours and flip semi-trailer trucks.
The study will look at alternate routes for detours in the area south of Reno. It will weigh whether the state's advisory thresholds should be changed.
The Nevada Department of Transportation issues about 10 high-wind warnings a month on Highway 395 between Reno and Carson City.
Officials say about 30 high-profile trucks have crashed on the highway since 1994. Trucks and other high-profile vehicles are supposed to detour to roads along the edge of the Washoe Valley when gusts of 30 mph to 40 mph trigger high-wind warnings.
