Hill’s horrible shooting slump
One might think George Hill is down on himself or somewhat embarrassed. The rookie guard for the San Antonio Spurs is going through one of the worst shooting slumps in NBA Summer League history.
After three games, Hill is shooting 2-for-25 from the field. So he’s upset, right?
“Not really,” Hill said today after his 0-for-6 effort in the Spurs’ 82-67 victory over the New York Knicks at Cox Pavilion. “Every shooter has a bad shooting game or week. That’s what I think the Spurs like about me is I stay poised. I think they drafted me because they see something in me they like.”
The Spurs drafted Hill in the first round, 26th overall. He played at IUPUI, which is officially known as Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. He averaged 21.5 points per game last season as a fourth-year junior and was Player of the Year in the Summit League.
He was drafted to be point guard Tony Parker’s backup.
Maybe Hill is not worried for another reason — under the league's rookie salary structure, San Antonio must guarantee Hill about $1.7 million over the next two years.
“It’s been a bad shooting experience, but at the same time, I’m happy with the way I’m playing because of my defense and rebounding,” Hill said. “I do whatever it takes to win games.
“It’s not disappointing because I’m playing well on the defensive end.”
Hill is shooting 1-for-6 on 3-pointers. On the bright side, he was 4-for-4 on free throws today and had six rebounds and four assists.
