Homeowner shoots man in home invasion

Las Vegas police say a homeowner shot and wounded one of three burglars who kicked in his door Thursday.

The shooting happened about 10:30 a.m. when three young men knocked on a door at 2655 Amber Crest St., near Sahara Avenue and Hollywood Boulevard, officer Jacinto Rivera said.

When the man inside looked out the peephole and saw the group, he retrieved his handgun while a woman in the home hid in a closet, Rivera said.

The man stood with his gun aimed at the door as the group kicked open the front door. The man yelled at them but the group kept advancing, prompting the man to fire one shot, he said.

The bullet hit one of the burglars in the leg. He fell to the ground outside while the other two ran into the neighborhood, Rivera said.

Police arrested the wounded man, who was taken to University Medical Center. The other two escaped a police dragnet.

No detailed descriptions were released by police Thursday.

Rivera said the homeowner, who legally owned the registered handgun, is unlikely to face charges.

The homeowner wouldn't comment on the incident.

Outside the home Thursday afternoon, a few blood spots stained the concreted walkway. Several footprints were on the metal front door, which was bent where it was kicked in.
