How’s my driving? Text here

Ever want to get a message to a driver that says more than a single digit waving from your fist? Now you can, thanks to CarPong.com, a Web site that brings road rage to cyberspace.

I think it's a horrible idea. But I signed up for it anyway, just to see how it works.

In a ReadWriteWeb.com story (http://bit.ly/6Yolcj), site creator Tony Mastrorio said: "I am working on getting towing companies to notify car owners when their car has been towed, where they can pick it up and the associated fee. This aspect alone would make the service very useful for many people."

How noble.

However, some posts from the site seem ignoble and impolite.

Get a load of these:

— "This guy wanted to fight in a parking lot of a service
stop on the pike after *his* door hit *my* wheel well,
while getting out of his car. Classy Masshole." - Godyousuck

— "When there (are) two lanes at a stoplight, that
doesn't mean stretch your car across both of them
and hold everyone else because you chose the wrong
lane ... ***hole." — Chaulmoogra

fast and be a douche." — Sabastian

Whew, those are harsh. But there are some innocent posts, like this one, in which the poster appears to be telling on himself:

— "I just washed my car, and my doors are frozen shut. Oh
well, she looks beautiful." - Halonursery

The vast majority of the posts fall into the "venting" category. One major flaw is that the site isn't connected to any existing database of license plates or vehicles. The only people seeing the messages intended for the driver in the other car are those drivers who visit the site or register there to follow their own license plate.

The chances that anything close to critical mass or large enough numbers of members in a geographic location actually doing this are minuscule. There is no incentive, aside from seeing how others perceive your driving.

Although the site discourages texting and driving with this text in its "terms and conditions" section (http://www.carpong.com/terms_condition.php), I'm afraid its existence actually encourages it.

This is a terrible idea. What do you think?
