Human remains possibly linked to two deaths

KINGMAN, Ariz. -- Human remains discovered in Mohave County are believed to be linked to two deaths that occurred in other jurisdictions. Investigators with various agencies are comparing notes in an effort to better understand the sequence of events.

Police in Glendale, Ariz., have alleged that Greg Hawkins, 48, shot and killed Cynthia Ann Langrall, 57, while she was jogging in her Glendale neighborhood Dec. 21. Hawkins shot and killed himself nine days later after a 10-hour standoff with law enforcement authorities in Northern California.

Hawkins' roommate, James Keefer, 55, was reported missing several days before the Langrall homicide. Family members said Keefer never returned after indicating he was going "exploring" north of Kingman.

Human remains thought to be those of Keefer were found Thursday, about eight miles east of Topock. Glendale Police Sgt. Jim Cunningham said analysis of a hand-held GPS device found at Hawkins' suicide scene led authorities to the remains off Franconia Road, some three miles south of Interstate 40.

"They must have had something that showed that there was some sort of a reason why that would have been a location of interest, but they didn't tell me why," Cunningham said. He said clothing found with the remains appears to match those Keefer was last known to be wearing.

Neither the Mohave County Sheriff's Office, nor the Glendale Police Department know whether the person to whom the remains belong was killed before or after the Langrall homicide.

"With everybody being dead it's hard to get a real sense of what the course of events were," Cunningham said. "They hope to put things together and establish some sort of hypothesis."
