Improvements approved for Henderson’s Reunion Trails Park

Improvements are on the way for a popular Henderson park.

The Henderson City Council awarded a $475,000 contract Tuesday to JNJ Engineering Construction Inc. of Hildale, Utah, for the improvement project at Reunion Trails Park, 44 Chapata Drive.

According to background included with the agenda item, high use of the 12-acre park led to a demand for additional amenities.

Reunion Trails Park, located near Interstate 215 and Paseo Verde Parkway, opened to the public in December 2011. It has a trailhead for the Amargosa Trail, which is a paved multi-use trail, and a dog park.

Kim Becker, spokeswoman for the Henderson Parks and Recreation Department, said the park also has a 7,728-square-foot splash pad — the largest in Southern Nevada.

As part of the improvement project, Becker said, canopy structures will be added next to existing canopy structures in the plaza area near the splash pad.

“That park does have good shade structures anyway, but this will provide even more additional shade,” the spokeswoman said.

The project also will include the installation of additional safety lighting around the playground areas, fencing around the basketball courts, and adult fitness stations around the running trail.

Funding for the project is available through the Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act.

The act, which became law in 1998, allows the Bureau of Land Management to sell public land within a specific boundary around Las Vegas. Some of the revenue derived from land sales is set aside for parks, trails and other natural areas.

According to information provided by Becker, the city of Henderson has received more than $238 million for projects through those land sales.
