In 2006, UNR opted against having presidential debate

RENO -- The University of Nevada, Reno was among the finalists to have one of three televised presidential debates but withdrew because of the cost.

Frank Fahrenkopf, co-chairman of the Commission for Presidential Debates and a Reno High School and UNR alumnus, said during a panel discussion Thursday that he's still upset by the decision made in late 2006.

He said the national exposure would have benefited the university and the city.

But UNR President Milton Glick said the estimated $6 million cost was too much, given a budget shortfall that has since been made worse by a statewide revenue deficit.

Glick said the decision to withdraw was made by his president's council.
