METHAMPHETAMINE CASE

Two get probation on charges based on 'Mafia Cops' inquiry

The son of "Mafia Cop" Louis Eppolito was sentenced Tuesday on federal drug trafficking charges.

Anthony Eppolito and co-defendant Guido Bravatti were sentenced to one day in jail -- for which they were given credit for time served, five years of probation with the first six months served in a halfway house, followed by six months of home confinement, said Eppolito's attorney Richard A. Schonfeld.

"We're very pleased. It was a fair sentence," Schonfeld said afterward.

The sentencing hearing before Judge Philip Pro lasted about two hours as both defendants each called several witnesses to testify, Shonfeld said.

The defendants were convicted by a jury in September of distributing methamphetamine and conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine.

The charges stemmed from the investigation of Louis Eppolito and Stephen Caracappa, who were convicted in 2006 of carrying out hits for the Lucchese crime family while working for the New York Police Department.

Both men moved to Las Vegas in the early 1990s after retiring.

TV, RADIO STATIONS

Ad campaign in Spanish urges support of immigration reform

A national advocacy group is launching a Nevada ad campaign in Spanish this week urging support for comprehensive immigration reform.

Reform Immigration for America, a coalition of faith, labor, business and immigrant-rights groups, is spending $100,000 on the ads, which will begin airing on Spanish-language TV and radio stations this week and will continue two weeks, the organization said.

The ads call on supporters to join the fight for comprehensive immigration reform, in part by texting the word "justicia" -- justice -- to the number 69866. The senders will receive updates on the reform movement and information about upcoming immigration-related events. They also will receive prompts detailing how to contact congressional representatives about immigration reform issues.

The TV and radio spots are meant to target Spanish-language voters in the Southwest.

NEVADA TERRITORY WILD WEST FAIR

State fair gets new name to go with focus on history

The Nevada State Fair held annually in Reno is getting a new name.

The fair's board of directors announced Monday that the fair will now be called the Nevada Territory Wild West Fair and will focus on the state's history.

"This is certainly conceptual, but it is the direction we would like to go in," said Rich Crombie, the fair's executive director.

Plans include highlighting life in Nevada as it was when the state was a territory, including pursuits such as mining, railroading and agriculture. The new concept also includes villages illustrating the influences of American Indians, Mexicans and Chinese. While there will still be carnival rides, the renamed fair will also include Wild West shows, Civil War re-enactments and displays of Nevada military history.

At least some of the fair changes will debut Aug. 25-29 at the Reno-Sparks Livestock Events Center.
