18-year-old indicted in death of 24-year-old female driver
An 18-year-old has been indicted on one count of driving under the influence causing death.
Authorities allege that Kevin Miranda had twice the legal blood alcohol limit when, at about 1 a.m. on Nov. 29, he drove his 2008 Dodge Ram through a stoplight striking a Pontiac Sunfire in the southwest valley.
The driver of the Sunfire, 24-year-old Angela Nichole Peterson of Las Vegas, was killed in the wreck.
Las Vegas police said Peterson was making a legal left turn onto Rainbow Boulevard from Flamingo Road when her vehicle was struck.
Miranda remains on house arrest with a bond of $25,000. He must also wear a SCRAM device, which monitors blood alcohol level.
FLYING RELIEF MISSION
Nevada Air National Guard plane on its way to Haiti
A Nevada Air National Guard aircraft has left Reno for a seven-day assignment to help fly relief items to Haiti earthquake victims.
Guard Staff Sgt. Eric Ritter in Carson City said the C-130 transport aircraft and crew of eight left Friday morning.
The C-130 is capable of carrying tons of material and personnel, and is expected to perform a variety of missions supporting the military, civilian and humanitarian aid mission.
The Haitian Interior Ministry has estimated the death toll from the Jan. 12 earthquake at up to 230,000 people.
Government estimates are that about 250,000 houses and 30,000 commercial buildings collapsed, many crushing people inside.
HENDERSON BIRD VIEWING PRESERVE
100-acre Henderson wildlife preserve receives certification
Officials with the city of Henderson say the National Wildlife Federation has certified a 100-acre preserve within the city as an official wildlife habitat site.
The Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve in a water reclamation facility is home to thousands of desert birds and migrating waterfowl.
The facility is staffed by city parks and recreation employees.
The Henderson officials say that the city must follow landscape guidelines and provide adequate food, water, cover and places for the animals to raise their young.
