IN BRIEF

CASE INVESTIGATED

Body found near parking garage believed to be suicide

A man's body was found Monday morning at the southeast corner of Las Vegas City Hall's public parking garage near Stewart Avenue and Las Vegas Boulevard, Las Vegas police said.

The unidentified man who is believed to have been in his 50s probably jumped from an upper floor of the seven-level garage, said Barbara Morgan, a police spokeswoman.

"It appears to be a suicide, but we're still investigating," Morgan said.

A passer-by contacted police about the body at 11:19 a.m.

The man was declared dead at the scene, Morgan said.

NEW YEAR'S EVE ACCIDENT

Teenage victim of I-15 crash is identified as Californian

A 17-year-old girl killed in a New Year's Eve accident on Interstate 15 north of Las Vegas has been identified as Esmeralda Luna of Pomona, Calif.

Luna was riding in a vehicle near mile marker 69 about 1:15 p.m. Thursday when it rolled over into the southbound shoulder of the highway, the Nevada Highway Patrol said. She was thrown from the vehicle.

Three other passengers were injured and taken to University Medical Center.

WINTER BREAK ENDS

Water main break affects services at Basic High School

Classes resumed at Basic High School in Henderson on Monday without one of the basic necessities -- water.

A water main at the school broke over the weekend, said Michael Rodriguez, a spokesman for the Clark County School District.

Bottles of water were distributed for drinking. Two portable hand-washing stations were set up, but restrooms were still functioning in the school's theater and gym buildings.

Rodriguez said the repairs should be completed soon.

The winter break ended Monday for the School District.

PROTECTION PLAN

Invasive mussel hunt to extend beyond Lake Tahoe

The hunt for invasive quagga and zebra mussels will extend beyond Lake Tahoe to other regional lakes and reservoirs to protect waters in the Sierra Nevada, officials said.

The Tahoe Resource Conservation District is expanding a boat inspection effort to include Donner and Independence lakes, and Boca, Stampede and Prosser Creek reservoirs.

Officials said the preventative move was prompted by the spread of quagga mussels in Lake Mead in Southern Nevada and of zebra mussels in a Northern California reservoir southeast of San Francisco.

The new program is being funded with more than $231,000 from the Truckee Meadows Water Authority's Truckee River Fund, money collected from utility bills to pay for projects and protect the river.

LICENSING PANEL

California board accuses octuplet doctor of negligence

The fertility doctor who Nadya Suleman claimed helped her conceive her brood of 14 has been formally accused of negligence and violation of professional guidelines by the California Medical Board.

The state licensing body said Monday that Beverly Hills fertility doctor Michael Kamrava acted "beyond the reasonable judgment of any treating physician" by repeatedly providing fertility treatment to a woman identified only by the initials "N.S."

Suleman has previously identified Kamrava as her doctor. Suleman gave birth to the world's longest-living set of octuplets on Jan. 26. She already had six other children.

Kamrava is accused of gross negligence in three instances: transferring too many embryos, repeatedly transferring fresh embryos when frozen ones were available, and failing to refer Suleman for a mental health evaluation.

Calls to Kamrava's office Monday were not returned.

RESIGNATION ANNOUNCED

Hawaii's Abercrombie to exit Congress to run for governor

U.S. Rep. Neil Abercrombie, D-Hawaii, announced Monday that he will resign from Congress on Feb. 28 to run for Hawaii governor.

The 71-year-old, who has served in the U.S. House of Representatives for 19 years, said he's resigning so he can devote more time to his campaign and to allow state elections officials to plan for a special election to fill the vacancy.

Other possible candidates for governor include Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann, a Democrat, and Republican Lt. Gov. James "Duke" Aiona. Republican Gov. Linda Lingle is nearing the end of her second term and can't seek re-election.
