UNLV student found dead after parents notify officials

A University of Nevada, Las Vegas student was found dead in a campus dormitory Monday afternoon.

The death does not appear suspicious, but university police are investigating, spokesman Tony Allen said.

The male student, whose name was not released, was found about 2 p.m. in UNLV's Tonopah Hall, a six-story building on the southeast corner of the campus, on Maryland Parkway near Harmon Avenue.

Ky Plaskon, news director for UNLV.TV, said sources close to the dorm's residence hall coordinators told the station that the student is thought to have died from an accidental drug overdose.

The student's parents, concerned after not hearing from their son over the weekend, notified university officials Monday, Plaskon said.

SOUTHWEST VALLEY SLAYING

Shooting victim identified as 26-year-old Las Vegan

A man who was fatally shot in the southwest valley early Friday morning was identified Monday as 26-year-old Las Vegan Lionel Gentry Jr.

He died from multiple gunshot wounds to the torso, the Clark County coroner's office said.

Las Vegas police said they were called about 6 a.m. to Pine Mountain Street, near Decatur Boulevard and Windmill Lane, because of gunfire. Upon arrival, they discovered Gentry inside a residence. He was taken to University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Police said Gentry was shot shortly after he argued with an unknown number of people. A man then produced a gun, shot the victim and then fled.

Police did not provide a detailed description of the suspect. Anyone with information regarding the slaying is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 385-5555 or the Metropolitan Police Department's homicide section at 828-3555.

64-YEAR-OLD'S DEATH

Coroner's office finds signs of carbon monoxide poisoning

A man found in a smoke-filled apartment Sunday afternoon died from carbon monoxide intoxication and chronic alcoholism, the Clark County coroner's office said Monday.

John Gerald Sarappo, 64, was found by Clark County firefighters in a first-floor unit at Safari Apartments, 2675 S. Nellis Blvd., near Sahara Avenue, about 3:45 p.m.

Firefighters had responded to a smoke alarm, Las Vegas police said.

Inside was the resident, sitting in a chair, police said. A lighter and cigarettes were on his chest. There were no flames when authorities arrived, police said.

The man was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

MOUNT CHARLESTON CRASH

Victim of sledding accident was 45-year-old Florida tourist

A tourist who was killed Saturday while sledding down an icy hill on Mount Charleston was identified Monday.

Mary Lynn Dougherty, 45, from Temple Terrace, Fla., died from cranial cerebral injuries, the Clark County coroner's office said.

Police said the accident occurred in Kyle Canyon between 1:15 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. Dougherty died after crashing her sled into a pine tree, police said.

Health care jobs program gets $3.2 million federal grant

Officials say a $3.2 million federal stimulus grant should help 100 Las Vegas-area health care and laboratory support workers start careers in cancer treatment and research.

The Plus One Program is an effort by the Nevada Cancer Institute, workforceCONNECTIONS and the College of Southern Nevada.

The aim is to help CSN graduates in nursing, medical laboratory technology, radiation technology and health information technology find good-paying full-time jobs in health care.

Plans call for the Nevada Cancer Institute to help participants gain national certification, clinical supervision and jobs in oncology nursing and allied health.

WorkforceCONNECTIONS will help with transportation, clothing, food, child care, and other support services.

CSN plans to expand programs and identify students for scholarships and entry-level oncology related work experience.
