POLICE STANDOFF
Department identifies officer in confrontation
The Las Vegas police officer involved in a shooting at a west valley home last week has been identified as 23-year-old Bryan Kirwin, a 10-month veteran of the department.
Kirwin was responding to a 7:36 p.m. call on Oct. 4 at a home in the 6300 block of Hobart Avenue, near Jones Boulevard and Washington Avenue.
A woman had called police and said she was having a domestic dispute with her husband. She said there were guns inside the home.
When officers arrived, they tried to make contact with a male subject, police said. They entered the home, the man fired a gun, and the officer fired his gun too, police said.
Officers retreated outside the home and formed a perimeter with SWAT officers and negotiators for several hours.
When authorities later entered the home, they found the man dead from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
Police said that the man had a gunshot wound to the leg and that a rifle and a handgun were lying next to the man.
Who fired the shot into the man's leg was unclear.
The Clark County coroner's office identified the man as 51-year-old Alan Cash. It said he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
18-YEAR PRISON TERM
Arizona man punished for murdering wife
A Kingman, Ariz., man who killed his wife 14 months ago apologized to her family members during his Tuesday sentencing hearing.
Dennis Schilinski, 37, was given an 18-year prison term, the maximum punishment possible in the plea agreement in which he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.
Defense attorney Steve Glazer said Schilinski was under the influence of methamphetamine when he shot his wife, Carol Bunn, 39, twice in the upper torso during an argument at their home in August 2008.
Schilinski returns to the Arizona Department of Corrections, where he served previous separate terms for a drug conviction and his role in a failed jail escape conspiracy.
KILLED IN AFGHANISTAN
Golf event benefits family of slain soldier
To benefit the family of a soldier killed in Afghanistan, 112 golfers gathered for a fundraiser at Pine Canyon Club in Flagstaff, Ariz.
Pine Canyon Director of Golf Andy Ford said the event raised more than $90,000.
U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Eric J. Lindstrom, a Flagstaff native and former Flagstaff police office, was killed in action in Afghanistan in July.
The golf tournament benefited his wife, Tara, and twin daughters, Olivia and Riley.
The use of the Pine Canyon facilities was donated by the club. Businesses donated items for silent auction.
PUBLIC CLINICS
Swine flu vaccinations to start in L.A. County
Los Angeles County residents without health insurance or a doctor will be eligible for free H1N1 flu vaccines at county-sponsored clinics starting next week.
The county's first shipment of H1N1 nasal spray vaccines arrived last week, and public health officials said they expect to receive more supplies every two weeks until at least December. The federal government is buying and distributing the vaccines to states in proportion to their populations.
Tuesday morning, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health posted a list of 64 county clinics expected to open by Nov. 8.
The clinics will be held at area parks, churches, schools and community centers, and they will offer both H1N1 FluMist nasal spray and vaccines for adults and children, officials said.
Last week, public health officials reported 35 flu outbreaks in Los Angeles County, including 34 at schools and one at a nursing home.
