Prison inmate's attack on guard under investigation
California prison officials are investigating after an inmate slashed a guard across the neck over the weekend.
The guard survived but required dozens of stitches.
Officials said 39-year-old Jonathan McClaurin tried to kill the 33-year-old correctional officer Sunday night at California State Prison, Sacramento. The prison is in Folsom, east of Sacramento.
Corrections spokeswoman Terry Thornton says the officer was cut on the neck, jaw and ear with a razor melted into a toothbrush handle.
The guard received 68 stitches before being released from a hospital.
McClaurin has been in prison since 1997. He is serving a 135-year-to-life sentence from Los Angeles County for three counts of first-degree robbery, vehicle theft and disregard for safety.
