NORTH LAS VEGAS AIRPORT

Student pilot was flying plane during accident

The experimental aircraft that hit a car on Rancho Drive on Oct. 30 was being flown by a student pilot with an instructor on board, according to a preliminary accident report released by the National Transportation Safety Board.

The plane, a Hallbauer Dragonfly Mark II, hit a runway light during takeoff from the North Las Vegas Airport at 4:50 p.m. After hitting the light, the plane reached about 200 feet, made a right turn and couldn't continue to climb, according to the report.

The plane hit the roof of a passing Chevrolet Tahoe before skidding across traffic and crashing. The student pilot, who owned the plane, suffered minor injuries. The instructor suffered serious injuries. No one else was hurt.

Federal Aviation Administration records show the plane is owned by Tang Yun Chieh of Las Vegas.

DISTRICT ATTORNEY'S OFFICE

Program offers chance to tackle child support

The Clark County district attorney's office is offering parents who have outstanding child support debts a chance to catch up.

The office's child support division next week is running its "home for the holidays" amnesty program.

The program is available to noncustodial parents who have child support bench warrants or suspended driver's licenses.

The division is inviting them to meet with case managers to try to negotiate a one-time payment agreement that would eliminate their warrant or reinstate their license.

The program starts Monday and runs through Nov. 21.

IMMIGRATION DEBATE

Some oppose invitation to forum for activist

Some faculty and students at the University of Nevada, Reno are angered that an anti-illegal immigration activist was invited to participate at campus forum next week.

Jim Gilchrist, founder of the Minuteman Project, is one of two panelists in a Nov. 19 forum sponsored by the Associated Students of the University of Nevada's Flipside Productions.

Some faculty opponents say they hope to prevent Gilchrist's from attending.

The other panelist is Miguel Acosta, a member of an immigrant rights organization in New Mexico.
