Unified Fire Authority Capt. Clint Smith said the girl fell Saturday afternoon at the Alta Ski Area. The girl was found facedown and not breathing but members of a ski patrol revived her with CPR.

SAN DIEGO BAY

Coast Guard vessel, boat collide, killing boy

A 33-foot Coast Guard vessel and a recreational boat collided Sunday as a Christmas watercraft parade was going on in San Diego Bay. The collision killed an 8-year-old boy and seriously injured five people, authorities said.

No one aboard the Coast Guard patrol boat was hurt in the crash just before 6 p.m., and everyone on the recreational craft was accounted for, Fire Department spokesman Maurice Luque said.

Authorities have not released details on how the accident occurred. It came just after sundown in clear weather with light winds.

The injured were rushed to University of California, San Diego Hospital, where the boy was declared dead, Luque said.

Five others were treated for serious injuries.

NORTH PACIFIC

India-flagged cargo ship adrift amid storm

An India-flagged bulk cargo freighter with a failed engine was adrift Sunday in the North Pacific, being tossed about by stormy seas and fierce winds, the Coast Guard said.

The 28 crew members aboard the 740-foot APJ Suryavir planned to abandon ship and board a Samaritan freighter expected to arrive early today, the Coast Guard said. A Coast Guard plane was bringing them supplies.

There were no reports of injuries among those onboard, and the ship was not taking on water, the Coast Guard said.

The Suryavir is carrying no cargo, making it unstable in the 30-foot seas about 540 miles southwest of Alaska's Adak Island, the Coast Guard said.
