Searchers looking for missing Reno teenager

Searchers on foot and ATVs are combing fields and other areas near where a Reno girl was last seen while riding a bicycle three days ago.

Police suspect foul play in Wednesday evening's disappearance of Karamjit Kaur, 16, who moved with her family from East India to Reno eight months ago.

Searchers also have inspected trash bins, parking lots and under bridges near where Kaur vanished.

Newmont Mining cited for June accident

Federal regulators have faulted Newmont Mining Corp. for a fatal Elko County mine accident in June.

The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration cited Newmont for failure to establish rules for pedestrian safety in a drilling area.

Steve Halverson, 57, of Spring Creek died June 10 at the North Lantern Pit north of Carlin after he was struck by a truck that was backing up.

Mine Safety and Health Administration officials say they terminated Newmont's citations after the company developed new operating procedures and installed a new backup alarm on the truck.

SENTENCED TO 30 MONTHS

Man who counterfeited cash in van gets prison

A San Francisco Bay Area man has been sentenced to 30 months in federal prison for counterfeiting $30,000 in the back of his 1996 Ford Aerostar van.

Assistant Federal Public Defender Daniel Blank said 37-year-old Paul Rickett is a Gulf War veteran who "lost everything" to a methamphetamine addiction.

The Secret Service said he outfitted his van with a computer, printer and reams of paper to make authentic-looking money. Prosecutors said Rickett was preparing to create another $100,000 when he was arrested in May.

Rickett, of Mountain View, pleaded guilty in July. He was sentenced Thursday in San Francisco by U.S. Judge William Alsup.
