32-member crew escapes

Plane damaged while landing at Nellis AFB

A plane was damaged while landing at Nellis Air Force Base late Friday, causing the plane to catch fire and forcing its 32-member crew to escape.

The E-3 Sentry warning and control system, also known as an AWACS, was being flown by the 552nd Air Control Wing out of Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma, according to a Nellis spokesman.

The crew was deployed to Nellis as part of the base's Red Flag exercises and was returning from a mission when the incident occurred. Officials did not say how the aircraft was damaged.

Emergency crews at the base quickly extinguished the flames and the plane was evacuated safely.

Investigators have not determined the cause of the accident.

More than 500 people turned out for the first stop in Nevada of the cross-country Tea Party Express tour.

Friday's stop in Sparks was the first of five the anti-tax tour will make in Nevada through Monday. The tour began in California and is heading east.

Similar rallies were planned for Winnemucca, Elko, Ely and Monday in Las Vegas.

Speakers and attendees criticized President Obama and Sen. Harry Reid, and expressed concern over federal government spending.

Organizers say the Tea Party Express is one of the largest grass roots efforts in the nation with about 350,000 members.

Man drowns during Bullhead City regatta

A Glendale, Ariz., man drowned in the Colorado River between Laughlin and Bullhead City as nearly 5,600 people floated down the river Saturday. Bullhead City police spokeswoman Emily Montague identified the victim as Nicholas James Fenney, 23.

Montague said authorities were not certain whether Fenney was participating in the well-attended Bullhead City regatta, an annual 11-mile group river float. Montague said a citizen called 911 at 11 a.m. after hearing a man screaming that he was drowning south of the Laughlin Bridge.

Fenney was not wearing a life jacket, Montague said. He was taken to Western Arizona Medical Center.

Montague said Fenney was pronounced dead at the hospital.
