TENANTS EVACUATED

Liquid mercury found in apartment complex

Crews have been cleaning up liquid mercury found at a Carson City apartment complex.

Maintenance crews at the Bella Lago Village apartments found a large amount of the silver-colored substance when they removed the carpet and padding Tuesday from the hallway of an apartment. The tenant had been evicted six days earlier.

Carson City Health and Human Services official Dustin Boothe estimated the mercury weighed between three pounds and five pounds.

City health officials ordered 22 tenants in 19 apartments to evacuate on Tuesday. Testing registered toxic levels of mercury vapor in the air.

The Carson City sheriff's office says an investigation into how the mercury got in the apartment is ongoing.

WOMAN STABBED

DNA science leads to arrest in 2003 death

Ongoing investigation and application of DNA science has led to an arrest in a February, 2003 homicide in northwest Arizona.

Mohave County sheriffs' detectives arrested Robert Dyer, 45, at his home in Golden Shores Thursday.

Spokeswoman Trish Carter said Dyer is charged with first-degree murder in the stabbing death of Theresa Ann Davis, 45, Mohave Valley. The victim's body was found in a desert area off Indian Lane Road in the southern part of the community in which she resided.

Chief Sheriff's deputy Jim McCabe said Dyer's DNA matched DNA found on one or more undisclosed evidentiary items at the crime scene. He declined to be more specific or comment on a possible motive.

Carter said Dyer is believed to have been the last person seen with the victim before her body was found.

DISABLED 5-YEAR-OLD

Foster parents charged in case of missing boy

The foster parents of a missing 5-year-old disabled boy have been arrested in Oakland, Calif., on suspicion of murder, police said Friday.

Louis Ross and Jennifer Campbell were being questioned by investigators in the case of Hassani Campbell, who has cerebral palsy, Oakland police spokesman Jeff Thomason said.

No further details were released about the arrests.

Hassani disappeared Aug. 10, when Ross said he left him outside a shoe store where his foster mother works.

Ross initially told authorities he left the car to unlock the store door to give Hassani, who wears braces on his legs, easier access. He said the child was gone when he returned.
