Boy, 8, critical after he is hit by errant gunshot
An 8-year-old boy was in critical condition Saturday night after he was struck by stray gunfire when people in two vehicles began firing at each other in a northeast valley neighborhood.
Las Vegas police said the boy was hit in the left shoulder in the 4 p.m. incident at the intersection of Kell Lane and Marion Drive, near Lake Mead and Lamb boulevards.
Police were searching for two cars that were chasing each other before the shooting.
The boy was taken to University Medical Center.
SUV ROLLS OVER
One dies, two others hurt in I-15 crash
An accident on Interstate 15 near Jean killed one person and snarled traffic for about three hours on Saturday.
Nevada Highway Patrol Sgt. Kevin Honea said the tread on the right rear tire of a Toyota 4Runner sport utility vehicle separated about 11 a.m., causing the northbound vehicle to slam into the inside barrier and spin several times.
None of the three passengers in the back seat were wearing seat belts, and one of them was thrown from the vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name and age were not released.
The two other passengers were taken to University Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, Honea said. The female driver and male front seat passenger were wearing seat belts and were not injured.
Northbound traffic on the interstate was being diverted at Jean, where motorists were taking Las Vegas Boulevard into Las Vegas.
BROTHER, 4, SHOOTS SISTER
Two-year-old victim still in critical condition
A 2-year-old girl who was shot by her older brother Thursday night remained in critical condition at University Medical Center late Saturday afternoon.
The girl was shot in the torso by her 4-year-old brother, who was wielding a loaded handgun he found in the family's home at 1708 Verde Jardin Way, near Jones and Oakey boulevards.
Las Vegas police are investigating the case. No charges have been filed.
The shooting was the second in less than a week in which a child was injured or killed by an unsecured firearm.
On Monday, a 5-year-old autistic child took a handgun in his father's vehicle and shot himself in the face. He died the next day.
MORMON CHURCH
Petition seeks change in gay rights policies
A petition that asks the Mormon church to reconsider its policies and political activism related to gay rights has gathered more than 1,360 signatures since it began circulating in June.
The Committee for Reconciliation plans to deliver the petition to leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Salt Lake City in November. The petition is posted on the Web site LDSapology.com.
Organizer Cheryl Nunn of Santa Cruz, Calif., said Friday that the petition is a reaction to the Utah-based church's involvement in Proposition 8, a 2008 California ballot initiative that banned gay marriage.
