MISAPPROPRIATION CASE

Krolicki trial delayed again, until Dec. 14

The trial for Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki, who is accused of misappropriating state funds, has been delayed again.

Judge Valerie Adair on Monday set a new trial date for Dec. 14 after some legal squabbling between Krolicki's attorneys and prosecutors. The trial had been set for Oct. 12.

The trial was delayed by expected defense motions to dismiss the case and the amount of time prosecutors will need to respond.

The state attorney general's office contends that Krolicki, while state treasurer, and Kathy Besser, his chief of staff, misappropriated about $6 million in fees earned by the state's college savings program by not depositing it in state accounts. The funds have been accounted for and Krolicki and Besser have maintained their innocence.

HOTEL PARKING LOT BRAWL

Man sentenced in stabbing death

A man who was involved in a 2006 brawl at a Strip casino parking garage was sentenced Monday in the stabbing death of another man.

Matthew Arreola, 25, who pleaded guilty in July to voluntary manslaughter, will spend two to five years in prison.

Authorities said Arreola stabbed Corey Pelto after the two men and about 10 others were involved in a brawl inside the Treasure Island parking garage during the early morning hours of May 29, 2006. Pelto died of his wounds two months later.

Arreola denied stabbing Pelto when first interviewed by investigators, according to court records.

The fight began with a verbal altercation in a Treasure Island men's room where one of Pelto's friends bumped into another man, according to court records.
