LAKE MEAD DEATH

Boy found under boat died from asphyxiation

The boy whose body was found Thursday night under a houseboat at Lake Mead died from carbon monoxide asphyxiation, with drowning as a contributing factor, according to the National Park Service.

The source of the carbon monoxide is still under investigation.

The 11-year-old boy was with his parents and a sibling aboard a Seven Crown Resorts rental houseboat near Echo Bay when the incident occurred.

Dispatchers were called about 8:45 p.m. and were told the boy had been taken out of the water and was getting CPR treatment. It took roughly two hours for the boat to be found and the boy to be airlifted to University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The Clark County coroner's office ruled the death an accident, according to the park service.

CLAN ALPINE RANGE

Wildfire grows to more than 10,000 acres

Crews on Saturday were trying to gain the upper hand on a wildfire that has grown to more than 10,000 acres, or nearly 16 square miles, in the Clan Alpine Range.

The Hoyt fire, about 125 miles northeast of Reno, was 50 percent contained late Saturday afternoon, two days after a pilot was killed while battling the blaze in a single-engine air tanker.

Dave Jamsa of the Missoula, Mont., area was trying to make a drop when his plane went down in rugged terrain. He worked for Minuteman Aerial Applications, which owned the aircraft.

Fire officials said the blaze is burning brush and pinyon-juniper woodlands in a remote area of Churchill County east of Dixie Valley.

They said no houses are nearby, but the fire threatened critical habitat for sage grouse and desert bighorn sheep.

"Initial attack suppression efforts have been effective over the last few days." incident Commander Tom Suwyn said. "Safety remains our first priority as firefighters continue work."

With the help of seven air tankers and three helicopters, about 350 firefighters were battling the blaze about 70 miles northeast of Fallon.

Officials said they expect full containment Monday.

The cause of the fire that began Thursday is under investigation.

The National Transportation Safety Board continues to investigate the cause of the plane crash.
