$150,000 IN DAMAGE

Dryer may have caused house fire

Investigators believe materials ignited by a dryer caused about $150,000 worth of damage to a house near Lake Mead Boulevard and Warm Springs Road early Tuesday.

The blaze started around 2 a.m. in the laundry room of a house at 131 Beech Ave. When Henderson firefighters arrived, smoke could be seen coming from a side door, windows and the roof vents of the single-story house.

The occupants, a family of six, were woken by the smell of smoke and escaped without injury.

Firefighters got the blaze under control within 15 minutes. The damage estimate includes heavy smoke damage and destruction in the laundry room and attic of the house.

ECONOMIC TROUBLES

300 more jobs to be cut in Washoe County

Washoe County is cutting 300 more jobs because of the economic downturn.

The county already has more than 200 unfilled positions that have accumulated over the past three years for a total of 500 jobs and $100 million cut from county spending.

Today, the start of the 2009-10 fiscal year, is the last day for 32 employees. Thirty people were laid off in June.

The jobs of 145 employees who are retiring early will remain vacant, leaving 2,600 employees.

County Manager Katy Simon said the county has been revising and recalculating its budget for four years.
