POLICE SHOOTING
Man ignored officers' orders to drop knife
A man shot by a police officer Sunday morning ignored repeated demands to drop a knife and sharpening shaft he was holding to his own neck, according a Las Vegas police report.
Julio Cesar Velazquez, 37, was shot once in the lower torso after officers say he muttered "mato," Spanish for "kill," while refusing to obey commands to drop the knife and stay within their view.
Officers received a call around 1:30 a.m. Sunday about a man standing with a knife pressed against his throat outside 4501 Swandale Ave., near Lamb Boulevard and Boulder Highway.
According to the report, Velazquez didn't heed demands to drop the weapons. He then tried to go into the house and was heard saying "mato." That's when an officer, fearing for the man's life and those possibly inside the home, fired one shot.
Velazquez was shot in the lower stomach and was treated at Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center. He was booked into the Clark County Detention Center on a charge of resisting arrest with a deadly weapon.
