CITY REDEVELOPMENT PLAN
Group repeats request for measures on ballot
With time running out, a group backed by the Culinary union is again asking the Nevada Supreme Court to order two anti-redevelopment measures to be placed on the June 2 municipal ballot.
A 52-page filing submitted Monday by the Las Vegas Taxpayer Accountability Committee argues the state high court could extend voting or order a special election if it decides the Las Vegas City Council improperly blocked the measures.
The group wants to put measures before voters to repeal the city's redevelopment plan and require voter approval for major projects like a proposed new city hall.
The Supreme Court reviewed the question once before, but sent it back to a Clark County District Court judge. He upheld a City Council decision that the measures were defective.
FUNDRAISER FOR REID
Obama won't meet with Gibbons on visit
Gov. Jim Gibbons said he was notified Monday that President Barack Obama won't meet with him and some key Nevada business leaders to discuss hardships faced by the state's tourism industry.
Obama is scheduled to be in Las Vegas on May 26 for a fundraiser for U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.
Gibbons said he was disappointed that Obama isn't making an effort to "repair the damage" done by his comment in February that corporations shouldn't use bailout funds for trips to Las Vegas or the Super Bowl, or to get corporate jets.
White House press secretary Robert Gibbs has said Obama wasn't discouraging travel to Las Vegas and instead was referring specifically to companies getting public funds.
Gibbons said Obama's remarks caused economic damage in Las Vegas, adding that over 400 conventions and business meetings scheduled to be held there recently have been canceled.

Man gets life sentence for sex with girl, 8
A Kingman, Ariz., man who videotaped himself having sex with an 8-year-old girl was sentenced to life in prison Monday.
Randolph Schoen, 58, must serve at least 35 years before he is eligible for parole under the plea agreement that convicted him of sexual conduct with a minor and burglary.
Prosecutor Megan McCoy said a DVD found in Schoen's home features a two-hour sex session Schoen recorded with the girl in January.
