IN BRIEF

GOES THROUGH BRICK WALL

Boy critical after SUV crashes into a house

A 10-year-old boy was in critical condition Monday because of injuries sustained when the 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer in which he was riding crashed into a home.

The crash occurred Sunday when the vehicle broke through a brick wall as the driver was fleeing two prior hit-and-runs, Las Vegas police said.

The incident happened at 7:30 p.m. near Michael Way and Seattle Slew Drive, where witnesses said the driver of the sport utility vehicle was headed south on Michael.

The vehicle veered to the west and crashed through a brick wall before coming to rest in a home in the 2400 block of Bay Meadows Circle.

The 25-year-old driver of the SUV, Juan Esteves-Villegas, was arrested on charges of felony driving under the influence and child neglect with substantial bodily harm, police said.

He was being held at the Clark County Detention Center on $10,000 bail.

The boy was the only passenger and was not wearing a seat belt, police said. He was taken to University Medical Center.

UNHEALTHFUL LEVELS

Ozone advisory issued for Las Vegas Valley

Clark County air quality officials have issued an advisory for ground-level ozone today.

The Las Vegas Valley could see unhealthful levels of ozone, which can reduce lung function and worsen respiratory diseases when it occurs at ground level, according to the county Department of Air Quality and Environmental Management.

Officials suggest residents reduce the formation of ground-level ozone by filling up gasoline tanks after sunset, avoiding gasoline spillage, combining errands, maintaining vehicles and using mass transit.
