Garage fire forces family from their home

A noon fire gutted the garage of a northwest valley house on Friday and left a family homeless.

An occupant of the home told investigators she saw flames around her dryer, at 2237 La Sombra Street, near Lake Mead and Jones boulevards.

When Las Vegas Fire Department firefighters arrived, flames and thick black smoke were coming from the garage. Everybody inside escaped unharmed.

$100,000 damage caused by chimney fire

A chimney fire caused $100,000 in damage to a Foothills Country Club home on Thursday.

Residents inside the home, at 8801 Robinson Ridge Drive, near Charleston Boulevard and Durango Drive, noticed embers coming into the fireplace from above about 10 p.m.

When firefighters with the Las Vegas Fire Department arrived, flames and smoke were showing from the roof, according to department spokesman Tim Szymanski.

The agency plans two public meetings to gather comment from various parties. The first meeting will be 7 p.m. Jan. 20 at the NDOW office in Reno and the second will be 7 p.m. Jan. 21 at the Fallon Convention Center.

DOUGLAS COUNTY

Elevated levels of radon reported

Many Douglas County houses have elevated levels of a poisonous radioactive gas that is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States after cigarette smoking.

The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension reports 35 percent of homes tested in Minden and Gardnerville have elevated levels of radon.

Radon is a naturally occurring, odorless gas that is dispersed in outdoor air, but can reach harmful levels when trapped in buildings.

Cooperative extension officials are urging area residents to test their homes for radon in January, which is National Radon Action Month.
