Officer fires after jaywalker points gun

A Las Vegas police officer shot at a suspect near Walnut Road and Cheyenne Avenue early Monday afternoon.

Neither the officer nor the suspect involved was injured, police said.

The shooting happened after the unidentified officer stopped the man for jaywalking just before 1 p.m., police said. The officer wanted to give the man a warning. The suspect then began to argue and pointed a gun at the officer as he ran away. The officer fired at the suspect as he fled, police said.

Police closed roads in the area as they searched for the suspect. Cheyenne was closed from Pecos Road to Walnut. Walnut was closed at Cheyenne. Cecile Avenue was closed between Walnut and Pecos. All roads reopened about 4:45 p.m.

Police had not found the suspect late Monday. The man is described as in his 20s, 5 feet 9 inches tall and black. He was wearing a red baseball cap, black T-shirt with a white T-shirt underneath and red shorts.

COOLER CONDITIONS EXPECTED

L.A. has temperatures in 80s nine days in row

Winter in Los Angeles has felt a bit like summer of late.

The National Weather Service said Monday was the city's ninth straight day with temperatures in the 80s, a record for January.

Meteorologist Jamie Meier said a high of 82 degrees was recorded at a University of Southern California weather station near downtown.

The city's previous record of 80-degree temperatures was a seven-day stretch in January 1983.

Forecasters expect today to be cooler with temperatures in the 70s. Rain is expected on Wednesday, as Santa Ana conditions that warmed Southern California are replaced by a Pacific storm moving down the coast.
